Frequently Asked Questions

 Do you accept insurance?

Little Steps has chosen to be a Direct Pay practice and an Out-of-Network provider. Upon request, I will provide families with a superbill following each session that contains all necessary information and codes needed to submit for insurance reimbursement. As every insurance plan is different, it is recommended you contact your insurance company prior to starting services to determine what your Out-of-Network benefits are. The following questions may be useful in starting a conversation with your insurance provider:
1. Do I have Out-of-Network physical therapy benefits? If not, what does that mean?
2. Am I eligible to receive direct reimbursement from the insurance company for my visit?
3. What percentage of the money I paid at my visit will the insurance company reimburse me?
4. Do I have an Out-of-Network deductible to meet?

I have chosen this approach as it allows me to focus solely on treating your child and providing you the best one-on-one care possible. It allows me to provide sessions where it benefits you best, including in the home setting, out in the community, or as an as needed consultation. It also allows for more flexibility in scheduling so I can begin seeing your child doing those critical periods of development, without waiting for insurance approvals and authorizations. For full transparency, all costs are provided upfront, you will not receive any unexpected bill from Little Steps.

Do I need a referral?

No. Virginia is a direct access state, which allows your child to be treated for 30 days before needing to obtain a referral from their doctor. Once an evaluation has been performed the plan of care will be sent to your child’s physician.

Does Torticollis fix itself?

No torticollis will not correct itself without proper intervention. Torticollis is caused by a very tight muscle in the baby’s neck on one side, and a very weak muscle in their neck on the other side. If nothing is done to address these impairments those muscles will continue to get tighter and weaker, which will further limit your babies mobility and also commonly lead to plagiocephaly or a flattening to develop on their head. Treatment for this condition includes a comprehensive plan involving passive and active stretching, exercises, proper handling, as well as environmental modifications. If left untreated torticollis can lead to delay in milestone development, strength deficits, decreased functional mobility, and muscle tightness through your babies trunk.

When should my baby be evaluated for services?

If you notice your child doing any of the following movements or behaviors, they could potentially benefit from pediatric physical therapy services:
- Disliking “Tummy Time”
- Developing a flattening on one side of the head, or other facial asymmetries
- Asymmetries of movement
* Only rolling one way
* Only looking one way
* Only using one side of their body when crawling
- Bottom scooting as predominant form of mobility
- Favoring a W-sit position
- Failing to meet developmental milestone, as indicated by your pediatrician

When should I be concerned if my child is toe walking?

Toe walking may be seen as part of normal gait development, but if it persists past 2 years of age, your child is walking up on their toes greater than 25% of the time, or is falling frequently it would be a good idea to get your child evaluated. This gait abnormality could indicate core weakness, ankle instability, muscular tightness, as well as possible sensory concerns.
