Torticollis & Plagiocephaly
You may have noticed that your baby has always preferred to look one direction, their head is often tilted to the side, or a flattening is developing on the back or side of their head. If so, then your child may have Congenital Muscular Torticollis (CMT). CMT is typically a condition that presents with a baby’s head tilting to one side and rotated to the opposite side; however, there are atypical cases where the tilt and the rotation are on the same side. You may have noticed these positionings at birth, shortly after birth, or at some time during their first year of development. This condition causes muscles on one side of your baby’s body to be tight and the other side to be weak. If left untreated this will ultimately impact the way your baby learns to roll, sit, crawl, and play.
Untreated Torticollis is also associated with a condition known as plagiocephaly. This is characterized by the flattening of the back or side of a baby’s head, and may also be associated with asymmetrical facial features.
