The Great Croc Debate

Now that the warm summer months are here sandals, crocs, and flip flops are usually a parents go to choice for foot wear. But, not all sandals are created equal!

Did you know…

Your child’s foot will continue to change, grow, and develop until they are around 7 years old. That means the type of shoe they wear before this age can significantly impact their foot development. Wearing loose and poor supporting shoes—like crocs and flip flops (especially in the early years when your toddlers foot is made up of more cartilage)—can potentially cause orthopedic issues for them down the road.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when picking out a summer shoe for your child.

  • If possible avoid flip flops as they offer little support for your child’s foot

  • Look for a shoe that offers a strap to help hold the foot in place as well as a higher back to offer some heel support.

  • Make sure that the shoe provides adequate traction on the bottom to prevent any potential falling!

  • If your little one has a wider foot make sure to look for something that offers a wider toe box (see Cat & Jack sandals below)

  • Make sure that whatever shoe you buy is breathable. Children’s feet sweat twice as much as adults! For this reason avoid plastic material and opt for leather or canvas. This will help decrease blisters from forming, and help with increased movement of the foot within the shoe.
